U.S. Ambassador invites new and potential members

The U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, Michael M. Wood, hosted the annual reception for new and potential members of AmCham on Wednesday, March 12 at his residence. Around fifty companies met with staff from the U.S. Embassy and AmCham.

In his welcoming speech, Wood discussed cooperation between the U.S. Embassy and AmCham on various issues, including alternative energy and intellectual property rights. He also reflected on his role as Ambassador. During a renewable energy conference in Washington D.C. at the beginning of March, Wood helped Maud Olofsson, Swedish Minister for Enterprise and Energy, visit the exhibit hall at the same time as President Bush.  The meeting turned into a friendly 15-minute exchange between Olofsson and the President.

“So I now realize what an Ambassador’s job is. An ambassador is supposed to set up meetings, sort of like an appointment secretary,” Wood said to a chorus of chuckles from the audience.

“And another thing an Ambassador does is work with important organizations like AmCham, trying to promote the interest of US businesses in Sweden,” he added.

He also offered a few words of advice for those thinking about joining AmCham. “Because AmCham is such a great organization, I was pleased to offer the house for the new member reception. So for the old members, good to see you again. For the new members, I'm glad you joined, and for the prospective members, I think you should join,” Wood said.

Kevin Nicholl of DHL Express Sweden was one of the new members in attendance.  He said DHL joined AmCham because it allowed them to increase the visibility of its brand, stay abreast of trade issues and find potential partners. "We saw the opportunity to network within the American-Swedish business community,” he said.

Nicklas Lundblad, European Policy Manager at Google, was contemplating joining AmCham. He said joining would allow him access to a great network of people. After the event, he said the verdict was in. “I will join,” he said.
